Las Vegas police say that drunk driving associated with last night’s Super Bowl caused at three car accidents across the city that injured several people and left another person dead. According to an article released by 8 News Now, the first accident happened at 8:40 PM Sunday night on Rainbow Boulevard.

Reports say that the six-car accident caused one vehicle to hit a building and another to roll over and catch on fire. One victim was declared dead at the scene. The driver responsible for the crash was arrested on suspicion of DUI and charges against him are pending.

A female drunk driver is responsible for injuring a 15-year-old boy after her Acura hit the teen at a bus stop near Spring Mountain and El Camino Roads last night. The boy remains in critical condition at University Medical Center.

Another intoxicated woman rolled her vehicle last night near the intersection of Clayton Street and Ranch House Road while she was speeding. Luckily, no one was injured.

Many other potential accidents were prevented last night thanks to Metro Police. Their efforts nabbed 13 drunk drivers at sobriety checkpoints that were set up across the city.

Wednesday

• At intersections near Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn from 6:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Thursday

• At major intersections near Tropicana and Paradise 6:00 AM – 11:00 AM and          2:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Friday

• At major intersections near Serene and Eastern from 6:00 AM – 11:00AM
• At major intersections near Cheyenne and Losee from 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Two people from Las Vegas, Nevada, were killed early Thursday morning after being involved in a single-vehicle crash on an on-ramp of I-215. According to 8 News Now, the accident occurred as the vehicle exited the highway near Cheyenne Avenue.

Investigators with the Nevada Highway Patrol said that the vehicle did not stop or slow down as it got off the highway and passed through an intersection. Authorities say the vehicle was traveling too fast and collided with a barrier wall next to the highway. The 66-year-old driver and 72-year-old passenger both died at the scene of the accident.

Experts say that Thursday’s deaths bring the total number of highway fatalities in the state to eight so far for the year. The number of highway deaths in the state has slowly, but steadily, risen in recent years.

This rise caused the Advocates for Highway Safety to research the growing problem and released a report yesterday that reveals the monetary cost of reckless driving. The report estimates that state taxpayers pay $1.9 billion a year for accidents caused by negligent driving. That cost includes medical expenses, property damage, legal costs, infrastructure repair, employee payout losses, and lost productivity.

The exercise, which was sponsored by the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, hosted officers focusing on drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and drivers who pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians. They hoped the end goal of the event was increased awareness of surroundings on the highway by both drivers and pedestrians.

The effort was conducted in response to a string of recent pedestrian accidents in the area. In October, a 6-year-old girl was killed when she was hit in a crosswalk by a by a 78-year-old woman. Studies show, of the 414 pedestrian accidents in Clark County last year, 105 of them involved a child between the ages of one and 15, while 28 involved someone ages 16 to 20.

An alleged drunken driver responsible for hitting and killing a 12-year-old girl on Halloween night was released on bail this morning. According to 8 News Now, the judge put several stipulations in place for the release.

The judge stated during the 41-year-old suspect’s hearing that he must remain under house arrest, cannot drive, and must wear an alcohol sensor bracelet.

According to the arrest report of the incident, the accident happened around 8:22 PM at the intersection of Sandstone Bluffs and Wesley Lake in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Halloween night. The driver admitted to arresting officers that he was speeding and did not see the girl attempting to cross at the corner of the street. Officers suspected that the driver was under the influence. Field sobriety tests were conducted-which the man failed-and he was arrested.

Once at the station, a breath alcohol test was given to the suspect. He blew a .67 and .68, just below the legal limit of .08. Officers then called in a drug recognition expert who determined the man was under the influence of an analgesic narcotic and alcohol.

The man admitted in court that he was on prescription medication at the time because of an earlier slip and fall accident.

The parents of a young woman who was killed by an underage drunk driver has filed a lawsuit against the driver. More importantly, they have also filed suit against the Clark County School Police Department and several employees, including the chief, for the part they played in a party where the young man got drunk with officers and the subsequent cover up following the accident.

According to Channel 8 News Now, the paperwork was filed in Clark County Court Thursday and names twelve individuals as defendants, including the now suspended chief of the department, Phil Arroyo.

The suit was filed in response to the cover-up of the party. After the party, the 18-year-old then sped away and crashed into the car driven by the victim who died at the scene of the crash. After the crash, the Chief then began a campaign to keep employees who attended the party quiet. Las Vegas Police caught wind of the allegations and are currently investigating them further.

The parents of the victim plan to create a scholarship fund in their daughter’s name with any money received from the suit.

Educators at Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nevada, are hoping to teach their juniors and seniors at the school a life-long lesson about the ramifications of drinking and driving by participating in a new campaign called “Every 15 Minutes”.

The two-day program mixes realistic dramatizations of different crash scenarios with real statistics on teenage alcohol related fatalities in hopes of having students identify better with the consequences of drinking and driving.

According to 8 News Now, at 9:50 AM yesterday, the teens witnessed a dramatized drunk driving accident scene in which one student died, one student was arrested for drunk driving, and two other “injured” students were taken to the hospital by airlift and ambulance.

Throughout Thursday and today, a random student will “die” and be pulled from class to simulate the fatality that occurs once every fifteen minutes due to alcohol on American roadways. Then later, the entire school will gather at an assembly to listen to several speakers, including participants from the dramatization, a representative of the Henderson District Attorney’s Office, and a parent who lost a child to drunk driving discuss the real affects drinking and driving can have on lives. Students will also discuss the individual impact the program had on them.

A man has been arrested on charges of driving under the influence after plowing a truck into the stairwell of an apartment complex. According to Channel 4 News, a pregnant woman was transported to the hospital following the crash.

The accident occurred several hours after the 27-year-old male driver of a red pickup began drinking. He was driving the truck east on St. Lawrence Street and was hit by an SUV after failing to stop at an intersection with Forest Street where he had a stop sign. The truck then went off the road and drove into the stairs at a Casson Apartment building. The intoxicated driver initially left the scene, but then returned and was taken into custody by authorities.

The drunk driver was charged with driving under the influence and two other misdemeanor charges. While the woman driving the SUV was uninjured in the crash, she was transported to a local hospital as common procedure because she was pregnant.

Although no one was injured in this crash, it is a startling reality check to the dangers drunk driving poses. A child could have been playing on the steps at the apartment, the intoxicated driver could have been hurt, or worse, the pregnant woman or her unborn child could have been injured.

Item – on the Sun front page that a middle class man is about to become homeless as his home is foreclosed.
